MP3 Player reviews: Apple iPod Touch 16 GB 2nd Generation

The iPod Touch 2G (2nd Generation) is yet another entry in the Touch line of iPods.  It works pretty much the same as the other Touch models.  The only real difference being it's storage capacity.  The 16GB Touch has been discontinued and is no longer being sold new from Apple.  There are still plenty available second hand or used from places like eBay and Craigslist.

All iPod Touch devices feature an remarkable multi-touch display; meaning, the screen can read input from more than one touch point at a time.  This feature allows you to experience some pretty unique control schemes in games, allows you to resize pictures on the screen and even zoom in and out on when using the Safari Web Browser.  It also features an accelerometer that detects position on the iPod on veritcal and horizontal axis'.  So if you turn the iPod Touch sideways it will automatically shift the display to a landscape orientation.  The accelerometer comes into play in many of the games available from the Apple's App Store.  The iPod Touch comes preloaded with a recent version of firmware; as well as, preloaded apps including: Safari, Weather, Stocks, Notepad, Contacts, Apple's App Store and iTunes.

I was fortunate enough to get a hold of my 16GB version a few months before they were discontinued.  One of the advantages of having a second generation touch was that this model was supposed to be easier to deal with when jailbreaking due to it using a different porcessor from the newer 3G series.  The iPod Touch 16GB (2nd Generation) specs are slightly lower than the 3G: a 533 MHz processor, 128MB onboard RAM, song capacity is an estimated 3500 songs, supports 802.11 b/g wi-fi support, is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7 and Mac OSX.  Support for Linux user's is nonexistent, with a few brave souls venturing into success.

The 16GB version sold for $299.99 retail.  The 16GB model appealed to me mostly because I didn't want to shell out $399 for the 32GB model, but I wanted to have more than 8GB's or storage to play with.  My 16GB iPod Touch (2G) has found its way into my everyday life, and yes; when the day comes that it finally gives up the ghost.  I will be replacing it with the newest release available.  I love my iPOd Touch.  Even though the 16GB model is no longer available new, if you are looking for a great personal media device, don't hesitate buying an iPod Touch (regardless the model).  You won't regret it, I certainly don't.
