Biography: Voltaire

Voltaire

Voltaire was born in Havana Cuba, January 26th 1967. His family later
moved to New Jersey where he spent his childhood. His musical roots are
deeply embedded in European folk music - often speaking of love and lost or
how to get revenge. His live shows are extremely theatrical while heavy on
visual influence. Having been inspired by Jason and the Argonauts and the

7th voyage of Sinbad, he started his animation work at the age of 10 on a
Super8 camera. Eventually piecing together information from fanzines, he
was able to teach himself how to make foam and rubber animation
dolls/figures. His childhood film work eventually earned him a job a MTV
directing job in 1988. He has had numerous television commercials mainly
on Cartoon Network and SCI-FI. His stop motion animation 'The Garden Of
Earthly Delights' went on to win many awards including a Broadcast Design
Award which went to help establish his reputation. He is also a professor
at SVA. His first job was at the age of seventeen as an animator with
Parker Brothers. He was also frantic at that time about Duran Duran. The
first band that he played in was called First Degree which he participated
in during junior high school. From there he formed a band with himself on
vocals, a violin, a cello, and an acoustic guitar player. Projekt Records
signed him within that year, and in 1988 he released his first album called
'The Devil's Bris'. Two years later his second album 'Almost Human' was
released. One of his most popular song's BRAINS was written for Cartoon
Networks show Grim & Evil. He is also the lead vocalist for the New Wave
quintet known as The Oddz. He also made a short stop motion animation for
SCI-FI channel called Chi-Chan, which was originally based a graphic novel
by Sirius Entertainment. Chi-Chan is now a 14 episode animation. Voltaire
teaches stop motion animation at the School Of Visual Arts in New York
City. He also produced a graphic novel called 'Oh My Goth' starting out as
his own little religious scriptures. This involves an eight-page booklet
which includes himself being chased by minions of Satan as they would try
to prevent him from playing at his next show. There is also a equal to Oh
My Goth, called 'Oh My Goth! Humans Suck!' followed by the graphic novel
release DEADLY with a series of DEADLY sequels following it. In the
book-writing category is his 'What Is Goth?' which pokes fun at the gothic
culture but also delves into the history of the culture. Another book that
he released called 'Paint It Black' is a sort of home decor guide for goths
with useful tips about how to get around in the hardware store, etc. Early
2004 he signed a deal with Toy2R for key chains based on the graphic novel
- the key chain ended up being the company's Queen Bear! It was released
at the San Diego Comic Con where it did so well that it sold out at the
convention. A second figure was created in 2005 as an eight-inch DEADLY
figure. As you can see from this brief article, Voltaire is a very
creative and active individual who still frequently attends and plays at
Science Fiction events such as Dragon Con to this day. Look for Voltaire
to appear at the 2006 Dragon Con in Atlanta, Georgia.
