What is chi?

by chibo

Chi, or Qi, directly translates from Chinese to "breath," or "air" or "life-force." It generally refers, however, to Energy. All living entities have qi. Without qi, you are dead.

In humans (as in all beings) our qi is initially derived from our parents. This is our "original qi" or "yuan qi." Qi can also be acquired through food and breath, "Gu qi" and "zong qi," respectively.

Original qi dictates our tendencies towards health and essentially sets the stage, but the acquired forms of qi can go a long ways in terms of improving the qi we have to begin with. Qigong practice can supplement our original qi by harnessing the qi of the Earth. Likewise, a healthy diet will be rewarded with strong "zong qi."

Qigong can not be easily summarized here, as it has been meticulously developed for centuries. It has been practiced in China for over 5,000 years, so there must be some merit to this mysterious "medicine."
