The Pirates of the Carribean is a Disney story presented in four individual films. The first one was The Curse of the Black Pearl, which I am going to review now. It was released in 2003. The next ones are Dead Man’s Chest (2006), At World’s End (2007) and On Stranger Tides (2011).
The Curse of the Black Pearl is an adventure film starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. The film was directed by Gore Verbinski (The Mexican, The Ring, The Weather Man) and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. I think Bruckheimer’s name guarantees a quality film. He was the producer of such successful TV series as the CSI series (all 3) and Without a Trace but he produced several films as well: Top Gun, ConAir, Armageddon, Enemy of the State, Pearl Harbour, etc.
The Curse of the Black Pearl’s premiere was at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California and the film brought unexpected success. It was nominated for 5 Academy Awards.
Main cast
-
Johnny Depp – Captain Jack Sparrow
Keira Knightley – Elizabeth Swann (Governor Swann’s daughter)
Orlando Bloom – Will Turner (blacksmith)
Johnathan Pryce – Governor Weatherby Swann
Geoffrey Rush – Captain Barbossa (Captain of the Black Pearl)
Jack Davenport – Commodore Norrington (Royal Navy Officer)
Plot
-
Young Elizabeth and his father Governor Swann are on board of the vessel HMS Dauntless when they find an attacked ship with only one survivor, a young boy. The boy is unconscious so they brought it on board of Dauntless where Elizabeth finds the gold medallion of the boy and she hides it. She took the medallion off because she was afraid that the crew would accuse the boy of piracy. After the boy woke up, he told them he was Will Turner. After the crew took Will on board they saw the Black Pearl fading at the horizon.
The film skips eight years when Governor Swann brings a very fashionable dress to his daughter and asks her to join him to the promotion ceremony of Commodore Norrington. She puts on the dress which is extremely tight as it was made with a corset. She can hardly take breath. After the promotion ceremony Commodore Norrington proposes to Elizabeth, but before she can answer she faints and falls off into the bay.
Luckily Captain Jack Sparrow was close enough to jump into the water and save her. He realised that she had fainted, because of the corset so he took it off. He saved Elizabeth’s life. Commodore Norrington recognizes Jack Sparrow as a pirate

"It's a movie based on a Disneyland ride."
That's a pitch that didn't warrant a lot of confidence back before July of 2003.
