The role of the cutoff man in baseball

Besides the pitcher and the catcher, the cut-off man plays one of the most important roles in the success or failure of any baseball team from tee-ball to the major leagues.

The cut-off man is the player who fields the baseball between the outfield players and the infield basemen. Whether the shortstop, the second baseman, or both, take on the duties as the middle man, the skill and dexterity of the cut-off player is often the only obstacle between the offensive runners and home plate.

The cut-off man’s role begins the instant the batter makes contact with the ball. Whether the hit sails deep into the outfield as a sacrifice fly, whistles down the middle of the infield for a line drive or curves foul, the cut-off man has to react instantaneously.

The physical skills of the cut-off player are critical to both the individual’s and the team’s success. Sprinting and speed are essential in this key position. Besides running speed, the player must also be able to spin and change direction at a moment’s notice in case the ball takes an unexpected hop in the grass.

A strong throwing arm is a must for the middle-of-the field player. But distance isn’t the only criteria which separates a good cut-off player from a mediocre one. Throws must be accurate. The cut-off player has done little to help his team if he intercepts the ball from an outfielder, spins and tosses it over the head of catcher who is covering home plate.

No one can argue that physical skills and attributes are essential for the middle man. Besides basic playing skills and physical strength, the cut-off man must also have sharp mental abilities. The midfielder needs to be able to remember statistics and habits for the players on the opposing team.

For example, if the runner on first is leading the league in stolen bases, the middle man needs to stay as close to the second base bag as possible, while still meeting the expectations of the middle field position. The last thing a player wants is to have a run cross home plate because of a stolen base.

Through the years many runs have been prevented, thanks to the skills and speed of the cut-off man. A player who hones his skills in this role can make the difference between a team bring home the World Series title or finishing dead last in their division.
