Mother's Day on a budget: Simple gifts for mom

If your mom is like my mom, you may find it very difficult to buy for the woman who has everything. Although we may find it difficult to find the right gift, it always seems that the ones that mean the most are the ones we make ourselves. I know what you are thinking though, I'm too old to be making my mother a present. I say you are never to old to make your mother a gift from the heart, when you know she will cherish it forever.

Remember when you were in elementary school and your teacher would have a mother's day craft for you to make. Remember the look on mom's face when you proudly displayed what you had made. Chances are she still has it. Now, think back a few years to the sweater you bought her. Did she wear it? Does she still have it? Maybe, but I think we need to get back to gifts from the heart.

Scrapbooks- although scrapbooks are sometimes a bit overrated, they are a wonderful idea for mom. Not only can you fill it with memories of you and her, but of your children, poems, stories and just about anything that reminds you of mom.

Gift Baskets- if mom is a coffee lover, make her a basket with her favorite roasts and blends, a set of nice mugs, and some treats to go with it. If she is a movie buff, get her a movie club membership and put the certificate in a basket full of goodies, like popcorn, candy and seasonings. If she loves to read, buy her a few novels, put a nighlight in there with some book marks. The possibilities are endless.

Crafts- Do you have children? Get your kids to help you make a fun craft. My favorite is the foot print poster. You and your kids can put your footprints on a poster, add a poem or a quote your mom would like, and trust me she will love it.

Flowers- Roses are not cheap, I can agree, but mom might just like some other flowers, like daisies or carnations, which are not really all that expensive.

Make her dinner. Sometimes we don't really sit down with mom like we used to or like she always wanted us to. Make her her favorite dish, serve her like she did you and just let her enjoy a night of no cooking or cleaning.

Coupons- I gave my mother a homemade coupon book. These coupons ranged from a one free foot rub, to "I will do the laundry for a day", and mom can redeem these at any time throughout the year.
