Scrabble is fun. And it is about words. Scrabble players love words. When they are driving to work, they tend to think of different words they know of and their meanings and nuances amidst the traffic jams and harrowing experiences on the highway. They also remember the games of Scrabble they have played and the odd and long words they have seen and they have used. They sometimes rehearse over and over again the spellings of different words, and they strategize about upcoming games they may play.
They know that they should look for opportunities to put down "ing" at the end of words, such as "knowing", "eating", and "fleshing", to mention a very few. They rememember the little words, such as "qi", "qua", "xu", "za", "fiz", "wiz" and "suq", and the bigger words, such as "tranq" and "qintar".
Scrabble lovers look forward to combining words on the board. If you only have vowels with their lower point assignments, and you are behind, it would be very good to combine them with tiles with much higher point assignments.
Scrabble devotees, if they are really serious, should study a Scrabble dictionary to memorize as many words as they can. They should say them out loud, and say them often. Study often. The more words they know, the better. One Scrabble champion achieved a 700 point total in his victory, and that is because he knew a lot of words and could launch a lot of 7 letter words (obtaining the extra 50 point morsals). It is not enough to have a "knack" and a "proclivity"; you must also know many words to get to the top, particularly the ones that the Scrabble profession recognizes. There are some legitmate words that Scrabble does not recognize, so you should know your stuff.
Remember the words that end with "tion", such as "creation", "function", etc, and words that begin with "un", such as "unwise" and "unworthy". There are a great many other things you should remember, and that is why you should study, study, study. Scrabble is a passion for the faithful.
Other important idea is to be aware of the triple and double word score spots on the board so you can take advantage of them, and you opponent cannot, if at all possible. Plan your board placements, and think ahead.
Probably the best advice I can give is: Play the game often, and you will soon learn that you need to study and play more, and if you do play often, you will lose often, but don't let that deter you, for it is a game of learning, as well as of accomplishment.
