There are many issues facing new mothers in the age of technology and yet some of the best advice has been around for decades. Good old fashion common sense can never be over rated. I am a mother of two and when I meet a new mother to be and strike up conversation, I always advise her to obtain a copy of the book “What To Expect When You're Expecting”.
This book is the Bible as far as I am concerned and it educates women about the changes that may occur in the body. Educating oneself can prevent much unnecessary stress during this time and no new mother needs any more stress than she already has on her plate! Secondly an expecting mother should become deft! I do not know why but for some reason it seems that many women will approach a total stranger to share their horror stories (which is the last thing any new mother needs to hear).
These experiences are different for everyone and believe me you will have your own story soon enough! I will not get on a soap box about the issues that one should already know. If you have lived in a cave of ignorance and are not already aware that smoking, drug use and drinking are not good for or your baby then you should not be procreating! The most overlooked habit of a new mother is simply finding balance.
Realize that life is changing and now it is time for the baby. Put away selfishness for that time is now gone, but also take care not to lose yourself in motherhood. This sounds easier than it is. Remember that there will be good things to come for the trade off of things you must now give up. Yet within these sacrifices do not live through your child. Let your child become his/her own person. That being said it is also important to mention that being supportive and active with development is much different than forcing it because you are influenced by your own past issues or are in completion with other parents.
Lose the habit of running the newborn to the doctor over every little scrap, bump and sneeze. I swam in a creek and my crib was probably painted with lead paint (yet I live). Last but not least do not ever lose your sense of humor for I promise it will serve you well!
