Constipation does not occur very often in puppies and it usually does not need to be treated by a veterinarian. However, prolonged constipation and especially inability to produce bowel movements may point to some health problems that require veterinary attention. Smaller breeds, such as Chihuahuas, Maltese, or Miniature Poodles are more prone to constipation than larger breeds, but any puppy could be affected.
This article lists some of the most common causes of constipation in puppies, teaches owners how to recognize its signs and explores several types of at-home treatments.
Causes:
- Hairballs
Just like cats, puppies get hairballs. Long-haired breeds are more prone to this problem, especially during shedding time. Also, puppies with allergies, dry skin or any other skin problems may have a tendency to lick themselves frequently and swallow hair in the process. The hair, depending on amount can slow down or even block the foods that's being digested from passing through the intestinal tract, which may cause constipation.
- Indigestible items
Buttons, socks, small toys, shoe laces, large chunks of rawhide treats, etc. are very common causes of constipation in puppies. In fact, they are quite dangerous for a puppy to swallow because they could result in intestinal blockage, which requires immediate veterinary intervention. Odd items like that usually slow down the tract even if they do not block it completely. The puppy may be constipated for a day, but eventually the item will pass through. If, however, your puppy seems to be constipated, is in pain and/or distress and the swallowed item is not coming out, take him to the veterinarian right away.
- Medication
Medications are known for having various side effects and veterinary medications aren't an exception. If your puppy seems to be constipated because of that, talk to your veterinarian and he may change the prescription or offer some advice on how to help your puppy to deal with constipation. It is best to stay away from human over-the-counter medications (like anti-histamines or PeptoBismol) as they might not only cause constipation in your puppy, but also could be toxic.
- Medical conditions
Most medical problems do not develop until later on in dog's life, but rarely, a puppy may have a medical condition that could cause constipation. In that case, he will often have other symptoms as well besides being constipated. Health problems that can cause constipation in puppies are:
