OK, I have to say it. What is the point of even televising the Academy Awards anymore? I'll be honest, I haven't actually sat down and watched any type of an awards show in years.
This year, I've heard of all five movies nominated for Best Picture, but I have seen none of them. I've heard of all five Best Actor nominees, but only care for two of them. I've only heard of three of the five nominees for Best Actress. As for Best Director, I've only heard of two of the five.
I've found in the past that the people I think should win never do. Is it bad taste on my part? Eh, maybe 25% of the time. I'm one of the people that thinks Leonardo DiCaprio should have gotten a win by now. No, it's not because I've found him attractive in the past. It's because I truly think he's a gifted actor. If Leo wouldn't win it I'd want Will Smith to be next in line. I've admired him since his days of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Who will get the Best Actor nod? Everyone seems to think it will be Forest Whitaker, an actor I've never really gotten into. He's not a bad actor. I've seen a few of his films. To me, his acting doesn't leave much of an impression on me.
Who should win Best Actress? In my opinion, Meryl Streep is the winner in this category. In fact, she always has been. I love the work she does and though I haven't seen "The Devil Wears Prada," I'm sure that she shined, as usual. Who will win it? Sources say it will be Helen Mirren. Whatever.
I haven't seen "The Departed," but I've been wanting to. Now that it's out on DVD I will get my chance. With a cast like Jack Nicholson, Leo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Mark Wahlberg, how can you lose? But, word on the street is that "Babel" is set to win. Why? I don't know. I don't even know what this movie is about, nor do I care to. I know it stars Brad Pitt, an actor who is overrated and over publicized.
The only highlight I can even see with watching this show is that Ellen Degeneres is hosting it. She is undoubtedly funny and I know she'll make the whole thing viewable, but I don't know if that's enough to make me sit through the rest of the snore fest. I really don't care who the winners want to thank. I don't care about any possible political views that winners might want to shove down our throats. I don't really care who is wearing who. Does anyone? I'm sure there are people out there that care, but I bet the amount of people that don't care outweigh them.
So, what will I be watching on Academy Awards night? The "Dog the Bounty Hunter" marathon on A&E. They are all reruns, I've seen them all before, and it will still be better than any awards show.
