What do you need to know before starting an online business

by Irene Lizarraga

Starting an online business has become more and more easy. Be it an online shop, service provider or a content based website that earns from advertisement, thousands of people start their own online business yearly but only a few make it out of the red and into online success. The key to that success is, more often than not, hard work and careful planning. So, before you leave your day job in the quest for Internet wide success, there's some things you really need to know and plan for.

The first one is knowing yourself. Are you sure you have the right personality to spend long hours working alone, often for a very limited reward during the first months or years? Do you have all the skills that will be needed or should you consider partnering with somebody who can compensate where you are lacking? No matter if you are the best web designer in the world, if the idea of talking with a client and sell yourself gives you the creeps you may need to either train or hire a good salesperson. Online business are no different from any other business in that they generally require an investment of time, money or both before they start producing revenue. Even if you already have clients lined up, the payment cycles can often extend up to three months after the project is closed, but you will still need to pay the bills and eat during that time! It may be worth speaking with a financial advisor before starting up, and make a careful plan on how can you live until your online business starts earning money.

If you are sure you have the required resources for a worst case scenario, the next step is deciding what do you want to sell and what are your winning points that will people choose you over your competition. In many cases people decide to start an online business because they know how to do something really well and want to make money out of it. The problem is, there's many other people claiming to have the same skills and Internet means that they can be located anywhere in the globe. Study your competition to see what could make you different and better than them and make a point of having that spelled clearly on your website. No matter if you are a blogger looking to make some money from advertisement and affiliate schemes, or you actually plan to sell a product, to be successful you will need to convince your audience that you can give them something nobody else can.

Speaking of audiences, have you decided who is your target audience and how to approach them? Studying your audience has two main goals: knowing if your product is viable and knowing how and where to market it. The first goal is closely aligned with knowing your product, its strengths and weaknesses. You need to find out if there's enough demand from what you're trying to sell, and if the demand is strong enough for you to set a price you are comfortable selling. A good way of checking this online is by using the keyword selection tools of the major search engines. If lots of people are searching for keywords associated with your business idea, and people are paying to advertise on those keywords, chances are is because they are on high demand. However, even if you aren't in a very popular niche that's not a reason to just abandon your idea. You can either help create a niche, or maybe you will find that your audience mostly congregates offline, or in specific Internet forums (and don't use Google to search for things related to it). But knowing your target audience will help you estimate realistically how much money and time can you invest on your business idea. You can end up working on it part time until it's successful, instead of getting a loan to pay for it, and you'll be better prepared if things go slow.

Writing a detailed business plan, with goals, audience, strengths and weaknesses of your product or service and forecasts may be boring, but will give you a better insight into your business idea and potential for success. Investing a few days of your time crunching numbers will save you a lot of trouble if later on things don't work as well as expected. You will be either able to plan for it, or move your energies into another direction entirely before you actually spend a lot of money and time trying to make what seemed like a good idea work. And if things go well, you will have a clear roadmap you'll be able to refer to when your business increases and expands. Planning ahead will greatly increase the chances of you and your business succeeding in the competitive online work.
