This is the only place I have ever known
I am an American
With skin the color of dark coffee
I still belong here
I have worked my thirty years and
Paid my taxes
Tried to live a free and simple life
It’s been hard living among the others
Who would hate me and want to take my life
All I want is to be left alone to do my thing
Make some friends and have some fun is so important
While the world is all so messed up
I don’t need anyone else interfering
With what I know is right
So go about your own business from now on
Spent your time doing for yourself and family
If you spent all your time doing that
You would have no time to be bothering me.

In Harlem, I am nothing but a stranger
happening through. I don’t speak the language
and my skin’s too pasty
