Poetry: Inspired by Billy Collins

by Ted Sherman

Created on: April 13, 2010

Why does Collins call himself Billy,
Though he’s been our poet laureate?
The nickname makes him seem silly,
A loftier name he should create.

Those poets we find fittier,
Are whose names are more so,
Like John Greenleaf Whittier
And our Edgar Allen Poe.

Collins is right to be proud,
But Billy sounds so silly-iams.
He should join the three-name crowd,
Like William Carlos Williams.
