With a bagpack and rifle at hand
Desert air and enemies on distant land
Snares and minefields by the sand
He moved to attack by word of command
Hails of bullets and explosions filled the air
Buzzing slugs and metal fragments everywhere
Punctured dreams and fantasies hit with despair
As the soldier’s body left fallen beyond repair
A patriot’s wretched body lay on the ground
His everyday world blacked out without a sound
On a sealed metal casket his remains was found
Loaded on a cargo plane to head homeward bound

Poetry: A soldier's tale
by Ed Coet
DISTANT WARRIOR
I get this wondrous chill as night falls
in mountains or desert sand
and I find myself dreaming about
home,
The drums call out to me
On the distant horizon
I cannot help but be drawn to them
They lead me to my fate
Do I really want
Mama's boy they laughed and teased
Son don't worry time will come when this will cease
She kissed his skinned knee and his
"Daddy’s Boots"
Little girl in the mirror
In your mother’s shoes
And in your daddy’s green hat
Little girl
I am a Soldier on the battle field
Today I killed for the first time
I took away a life to save another and myself
Its kill
