My mother used to say,
when I was just a child,
when I was still at play,
when I was young and mild,
"She a poet and doesn't know it."
And I would laugh too hard,
to cover for the thought,

having written for so long,
written when I've frowned,
written when I'm strong,
I can without laughing declare,
"I am a poet,"and to my mother be fair,
add "And I know it!"
