How to train your dog

by Alaina M. Coyle

Created on: April 11, 2010

Training your dog takes patience and persistence. Prepare ahead by purchasing a training collar, leash and dog crate. Learn the basic commands, proper ways to correct your dog when she misbehaves, and always reward good behavior. Most dogs are eager to please, so be generous with your praise. If you are consistent with your techniques, you will successfully train your dog.

Sit

Praise your dog whenever she sits on her own, and repeat “good sit!” This associates the act with the command. You can also gently push your dog into a sitting position and say “sit.” A third way to teach this command is to take a treat and raise it into the air in front of your dog’s nose. As she automatically sits, praise her and give the treat. Repeat these techniques several times throughout the day.

Come

Call your dog by her name followed by “come” in an encouraging voice. When she walks towards you, praise her effusively and reward her with treats and affection. If she ignores you, attach a leash to her collar and pull her towards you after giving the “come” command. Resist the urge to repeat yourself; simply give the command and pull her to you. Only use the “come” command in a positive way. If you call your dog in a harsh manner or to scold her, she will be less likely to obey. Keep practice sessions short if your dog’s attention begins to wander. Practice this command from different locations and when you are not in sight of your dog. This will teach her to come when you call no matter what.

Stay

With your dog in a sitting position, raise your hand and say “stay” in a firm voice. Walk away a few steps, then turn with an animated “good stay!” Your dog will jump up in response, so avoid scolding her. Calm her down and when she is sitting or laying down, repeat the “stay” command and walk away. Add only a few seconds at a time to the length of time before you reward her. Use treats as you increase the duration of time with her in the “stay” position.

Heel

Begin with your dog in the sitting position on your left side. Use her name, followed by the command “heel,” and begin walking. If she tugs on the leash, gently pull her back so her right shoulder is in line with your left hip, and repeat “heel.” If she insists on pulling ahead, work with her in small counter-clockwise circles, nudging her with your leg as your turn so she pays attention to where
