Bad work at home habits to break now

by Sarah Bammel

Created on: April 11, 2010

Working from home there are several habits that will make it almost if not impossible to get anything done.

Not Getting Dressed

Just because you are at home does not mean you can go to work in your pajamas. First there is a psychological effect that getting dressed for work has. Just like the famous prison experiment by Stanford. Students played the part of prisoners and guards; they had to end the experiment early because it started getting out of hand. Being in a certain environment – clothes, walls, certain luxuries – all has an effect on putting the mind in the right mood. You could also consider actors and actresses.

An actor, wears clothes their character would wear. When in your office in your home, you are an office worker. To feel and be the part it seems right to wear the clothes that your character would wear to help you play the part.

You also never know when you may have to run out for something or have someone stop by. By wearing office clothes you are always ready to meet a potential client or network contact. It’s not a good idea to be caught in your most casual clothes when meeting someone that could be very important for you.

Misusing time

Put time aside for any chores and housekeeping that needs to be done. Just because your office isn’t in another building doesn’t mean you’re not at work. You wouldn’t leave the office to go home and put in a load of laundry. Maybe you would call in sick to work so you could spend the day in the sun and take care of some gardening. Learn to use your time wisely and see if you can find some short cuts to get the house work done. Get the kids to help if you got them or split the housework with your husband or house mate.

It is also a bad idea to have a television in your home office. You may use the excuse of having it there to catch the game and work too but you will probably find yourself watching the game more than working. The only reason to have a television in your office would be if you review television shows, or made for television movies. Otherwise, the television should be in another room of your home.

Not Limiting Interruptions

If you do not limit the interruptions then it can get quite difficult to get anything done by the time it needs to be done. When working in an actual office building you wouldn’t allow family members to call and have casual conversations,
