Favorite movie lines are an extraordinarily subjective idea. People decide what their favorite lines are based on how they feel about the movie, the characters, the plot, the context of the quote, or the lack of context of the quote. There are even some movie lines that people regard as favorites without ever having seen the movie. Consider such classic lines as “Play it again, Sam” or “There’s no crying in baseball!” or “Tomorrow is another day…” The following lines, however, are from films that are full of quotable lines. Nearly every person who has seen these movies could recite dozens of lines from them. The following are just a few of the thousands of possibilities of incredible, memorable lines from movies:
“ Bob Dylan once sang the times they are a’changin’, Ron Burgundy had never heard that
song…”-Anchorman
Uttered at the start of Anchorman, this quote sets the tone for the entire comedy. Featuring Will Ferrell playing the clueless, but talented, anchorman Ron Burgundy, the movie is both dated and hip. It takes place in the 1970s, and focuses on the plot of a woman who becomes a news anchor, thus throwing the news station into complete chaos as they deal with the changes.
“She turned me into a newt! … I got better.” -Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a classic satire movie. It takes the historical genre and turns it on its head, and is chock full of quotes. This particular quote occurs during the witch burning scene which makes a point about the ridiculousness of Medieval reasoning for burning witches through the use of lines such as this.
“How did you find America?”
“Turn left at Greenland” - A Hard Day’s Night
The first movie featuring the Beatles, this quote demonstrates their typical wit. Jokes such as this were a permanent fixture of their real press conferences, and are featured prominently throughout their first feature film. The instance in which this exchange took place was at a gathering for reporters to talk to the Beatles; the scene showed the usual disdain with which the Beatles regarded the many ridiculous questions they were asked.
“The Dude abides” - The Big Lebowski
The Big Lebowski is a cult classic. This line demonstrates the agreement of the main character - The Dude - in his unusual speaking style. An extraordinarily quotable movie, this Coen Brothers classic is full of great lines and amusing characters.
Movie quotes have become a way to interact with friends and acquaintances in today's world. Nearly every conversation is littered with them. There are so many great lines from so many great movies that everyone should be able to find a few favorites.
