Romance: Jane Austen style in modern times

Twenty something women in the twenty first century blame one image for their lack of fortune in love:  A fairy tale princess.

Looking for that prince charming has cause them to look for love in all the wrong places for all the wrong reasons, there for finding themselves well pass the age of marriage still single drinking martinis to forget their sorrows.

Just like a fairy tale princes, the image of a single woman has become a cliché that we are reminded of constantly in shows like Sex and the City, Gray Anatomy and others. But where can a real romantic woman turn to when she wants an honest view of love and all its components?, well that is miss Jane Austen.

Lets start by saying that miss Austen has been dead for almost two hundred years and she was and English country woman who might not have a lot in comment with a hard working city  girl from NYC, but if you read her you will find that she know not only that twenty century girl, but her mother, her friends, her father and her lovers.

The reason why Jane Austen is so loved and still read by millions of people of all ages and genders is because she wrote of love, real love, all types of love, that is, she wrote of people, real people.

All of her characters including her heroines are extremely flawed not only on one occasion, which is the general occurrence when it comes to fairy tales, a character that one day makes a mistake and then learns from it , never to make another mistake. In Jane Austen novels we see this people who are constantly trusting people they shouldn’t, making judgments on people they hardly know and to occupied talking about other people that they don’t even notice their own real feelings or thoughts, sounds familiar?

Now I must admit that there is one element of a fairy tale that I particularly like at the end of each book, which is great marriages preferably to rich man most of the time in money but others in matters of the heart .This is a wink to the reader as much as her ironic tone.

The romance in her style of writing is that love its not the end result, love does not show itself at the wedding scene, love is a journey with many errors, just like real life, whether its taking place in nineteenth century England or at a twenty first century world.

Her craft, that is, in her writing she demonstrate the ability of observations she possessed, her ability to describe real people, from the servants to the masters, the heroines to the love interest, the parents to the friends, this are all complicated relationships that will affect the character of any person and will influence their decisions for the better or worst.

Surely we can´t relate to women who can´t reveal all that they are feeling, whether is love, or hate or urgency, to run away or be rude, but we can still feel all of those things, we are still three-dimensional people just like the ones she wrote about.

The best example or her style, her ironic style comes from two of her best known characters, one Elizabeth Bennett a judgmental stubborn girl who we love, and Emma a heroine described as someone we wont really like, never the less we are going to hear her story.

Flawed characters that will not often be correct or do the correct thing, but none the less we love for those exact reasons and we hope that they triumphs in the end, much like the real people we know now.
