If you have a friend that have a thick skin when it comes to critcism, well tell them nicely that singing is NOT their cup of tea and it's best for them to keep their day job. If they insists they can sing their butt off, suggest that they go on a talent show, let them sing in front of a group of people they don't know, and let them decided whether or not they can hit a note.
If people tell him or her the exact same thing you told your friend as well, maybe they need to let go of the mic.

OR

If you have a friend that is sensitive and would take it hard, tell them nicely as well that singing isn't their strongest ability, and there are other things the friend may be naturally good at. Other options could be suggesting the friend to take voice lessons to "improve" their singing.

It would be best for them to hear YOUR opinion about their singing than others, since most people would be less friendly if ever hearing your friend sing. But if all else fails, let them tape their own voice and see who is right.
