Poetry: Thirst

by S. T.

Created on: April 08, 2010

On a hot and not so humid day,
Mary took a stroll along the Bay.
Half way through her little walk,
She saw a merchant on a dock.

The older man stood tall and tan,
With fruits and melons near his van.
The sun licked gold into his hair
And lit Mary’s cheek into a flare.

She placed her fingers on her lips
And picked the skin in dry white strips.
The handsome merchant smiled her way,
And directed her glance to the juicy display.

“I see your lips could use a kiss,
Why don’t you come and snack on this?”
Her heart in lead before her feet,
The offer seemed delightfully sweet.

Before she knew, she was back home,
Watermelon in hand with a jar of honeycomb.
But as soon as the melon was split in two,
Mary saw there was nothing to chew!

The fruit was hollow and had no pink,
Nothing to squeeze for a little drink.
There was no seed to plant and grow,
And Mary just simply had to let it go.
