Assessing if rap can really be considered music

Just because it is unconventional doesn't mean that rap is not music... Of course it is music.

It is true that a lot of rap these days are vulgar and have no moral value at all... but it goes the same with all music these days. Can you tell me any genera of music that has the same quality that it use to? None. You can compare Eminem and 50 cent to Metallica, Justin Timberlake, Pussy cat dolls and Dixie Chicks. They all have songs that include violence, death, sex, or any combination of such. But you don't hear people saying that Metallica isn't music. You don't hear people saying that because Dixie Chicks sang that Earl has to die, they are too violent to listen to. All JT seems to know how to sing about is sex, and yet our culture still lets their 8 year old daughters listen to him not thinking once that he is demeaning women. Oh and don't get me started on the Pussy Cat Dolls. There is something wrong when you hear little girls singing "don't you wish your girlfriend was a freak like me".

The fact of the matter is that there are more people in this world that don't understand the appeal that is Rap and hip hop music, so they are quick to say that it is garbage and useless. But the same goes for all music out there. I personally don't understand the appeal of 60's and 70's pop music, but that doesn't mean that it is not music.

If you are worried about how music is affecting your children then categorize all music as bad because there are worse things then rap out there.

KRS One once rapped "All I need is a friend." Isn't that better then Britney singing "I'm a slave for you"?
