Hypnosis… Miracle or Mind Game?
Is the technique of hypnotism helpful or harmful? Many people feel that hypnosis is an excellent way to cure people of phobias, addictions, and various health problems such as asthma. However, there is a lot of controversy as to whether or not hypnosis is as great as people make it sound. I personally think that there are some good things about hypnotism, but ultimately the negative aspects of this technique outweigh the positive.
First of all, it sounds great when people say that hypnotism can help to overcome longtime addictions, such as smoking. The person being hypnotized may get over their addiction in a matter of minutes, but the original root of the problem still exists. I feel that it is much better for someone to get over an addiction through the gaining of self-control and discipline. Once a person has discipline and self-control, they are more likely to be able to deal with other problems that they might have in the future. However, if the person had just gotten hypnotized, they might develop a problem in some other area of their life, such as an eating disorder or behavioral problem. This is because the person never really learned how to get rid of their problem; they just did the easiest thing possible. I feel that if a person puts hard work and dedication into overcoming an addiction or phobia, they will have a better feeling of satisfaction and success. I do not feel that someone could have the same self-satisfaction if they had just been hypnotized. As I said earlier, hypnotism may eliminate the problem, but not the underlying source.
I also feel that hypnosis is not completely moral. I am slightly disturbed by the idea of someone completely surrendering to someone else. I do not feel that it is right for someone to have total control over someone who is not conscious. The person who is being hypnotized has no control over what the other person is going to do to them. It may be something embarrassing or against their will. What if someone being hypnotized was told to run into the middle of a busy street? If the person was completely hypnotized, they would most likely obey because they are vulnerable and have absolutely no control whatsoever. If people are undergoing hypnotism in order to become deeply relaxed and spiritual, there are several different ways to go about that that do not require the person to be unconscious. Someone could
