Mother's Day gift ideas for first time moms

It's your first Mother's Day. You wait in anticipation as your husband brings your little bundle of joy into the bedroom with a box wrapped in bright pink paper. You open it with such excitement your fingers are trembling. After all, it took you about nine months to be able to celebrate this annual holiday call Mother's Day. After much fanfare and coos from the baby and your husband, you open the box to find ... something for the baby?

Whoa, buster; this is Mother's Day, not children's day! A sure way to perturb your wife on Mother's Day is to buy or make something for the baby and not her. We, as mothers, probably spent months before the baby was conceived worrying about our health and vitamins. Then we spent nine uncomfortable months carrying the little tyke. Sure, a gift for the baby is a sweet gesture but you better have something specifically for Mommy

Some suggestions for first time moms are:

- Gift certificate to a spa for a pedicure. Mommy hasn't seen her toes for the last few months so it would be nice to have them pampered.

- A great dinner out. For the last few months of pregnancy, Mommy hasn't been able to have a glass of wine. Perhaps she was not able to have fish (for fear of mercury) or maybe she had other dietary restrictions during her pregnancy. Take her out to enjoy the things she missed. And yes, get a babysitter! Or, bring in a chef for the evening if she just can't leave the baby with a stranger (even if it is your mom).

- Go out to an amusement park. She didn't get to ride the rides when she was pregnant so kick up your heels and have fun now.

-Buy her a new outfit. She lost the baby weight and looks great so treat her to an outfit or at the very least, some awesome shoes.

-Treat her to a girls night out. Call her best friend and plan the whole night out for your honey to include putting cash in her purse, taking care of the baby and having a surprise waiting for her at the restaurant she is attending with friends.

- Get out of your comfort zone. Do something she would never expect for her very first Mother's Day like name a star after her, buy a brink with her name on it at your local town boardwalk (this is usually a fundraiser for the city) or go to the ballet

The bottom line for a new Mommy's first Mother's Day is to make it memorable, make it different and make it unique. Next year, when the new mommy-hood has worn off, you can go back to buying the boring, simply, expected gifts like flowers, candy and jewelry.
