What to look for when buying a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy

If you are looking to buy a rhodesian ridgeback puppy then there are a few key characteristics that you may want to look for. Number one is going to be the ridge of hair that identifies them as such. Rhodesian ridgebacks have a line of hair that runs in the opposite direction of the rest. This ridge of hair is located on their spine. This is the key characteristic in identifying this breed.

Number two, these dogs are both amazing watchdogs and protectors. So find the puppy that is the least scared of you. Some puppies will run from you and others will run toward you. The ones running toward you are obviously the ones that have no fear of people. Another thing is ease of training which in this breed, is pretty low. This means that they can be a stubborn breed, something that takes a lot of patience and time to handle. If you are someone who cannot do this, then do not get a rhodesian ridgeback. These dogs were used as lion hunters so this characteristic was more than likely wanted.

Their cold and heat tolerance is pretty even, but I would not recommend having one in a place like Alaska or New Mexico. Their friendliness toward other dogs, other people, and other pets is pretty low. Meaning they may act overly aggressive toward another family member or a pet cat. Just remember that all behavioral issues can be fixed with a lot of time, a lot of patience, and a lot of training. Luckily for the person who wishes to have this dog, it takes no time at all to groom a rhodesian ridgeback. They have very short hair so you won't have to brush ten every other day like you would say a malamute.

Exercise requirements for this breed is not too high, but I recommend an hour to two hours a day to keep this dogs figure lean. Theses dogs will be loving and loyal to you and will more than likely ask you a thousand times a day to throw a ball for them. They have an average energy level, but then again as I said before they were bred for lion hunting.

All in all this breed is a good one, but remember the key points when you are thinking of buying this breed. Think of their level of affection not just for you, but for others and their energy level. Also remember they are amazing guard dogs and protectors for the family who is looking for a little more reassurance while sleeping or when they are away from home.
