Not everyone who graduates high school will attend a university the following school year. Many high school and GED graduates wait one or two years before attending college.
Some reasons include not having the financial means, not know what path in life to take, want to travel, or need a break from school. Whatever the reason is, it is important to know what you do in that gap year can help influence you when you start attending college. This gap year can be an informal educational lesson.
Some ways to spend a gap year are travel to another country, learning the culture and language; work to earn and save money; volunteer in the Peace Corps, or something related; or even take non-credit college courses for fun.
When you return to college, it will be possible to add your gap year as part of your educational experiences. This could be an advantage over other students who started college right after high school. Having a gap year allows you to bring world experience into the formal institution, the college, giving you a different perspective on issues and the college life.
