Making the decision to homeschool: What you should consider

Many parents that want to homeschool their children worry that they will not be able to get started or that they will try and fail. Social pressure to teach their children right can make some uneasy and unsure.

The first thing parents should consider is how much time they have to put towards homeschooling. There are many families where the parents work full time and still are able to homeschool, but that amount of work is not for everyone.

You should think about how much tie you have to dedicate towards homeschooling and how much you are willing to give.

Next you should consider what style of homeschooling suits your family. There are many different methods out there, and many parents pick and choose among these various styles. Take some time to look around the homeschool community both in your area and online to see what is out there and what you think will work for you.

Parents thinking about homeschooling should also consider how much support they will have. There are some families who go against their family and friends, but not every one is that strong. If you feel that homeschooling is what is best for your children you need to find a good support group that can help you get past any rough spots and help you deal with friends and family that may be less than enthused. Be prepared to answer questions, and you may turn some people's ideas around.

Most importantly you should consider your children. How will they handle being homeschooled? A social butterfly might resent being taken out of a public school setting and will need more activities and groups to be a part of during the week. A child who was having problems at school may take more time to adjust and change gears from the school setting to the home setting. Talk with your child about what they will need to feel confident and what they hope to achieve, after all it them who will be getting the education.
