Prom themes are all dependent on the youth of the school that picks them. But for the most part, anything goes. I have found that themes usually fall into one of five categories: Time related, fantasy/mystical, geography, entertainment and general. Below are some examples in each category.
Time related:
Nifty Fifties - This is a take on the 1950s. Bobby socks, poodle skirts, old 50s songs playing on a jukebox (used for photos of course)
Swinging 70s - Very psychedelic, Austin Powers type of prom theme. Very colorful with funky music.
Roaring 20s - Think Great Gatsby, bring in old clothing from a museum, even an old Model-T (for photo ops) if your school can afford to rent it.
Into the Future - This is not your parent;s prom! Use strobe lights and black lights with digital music and futuristic silver robots and hovercraft like vehicles to decorate your prom space.
Forever Young - Have some fun with your classmates and use a local printer (for cheap) to blow up poster size baby photos of your classmates for decoration. You could even make it a game so that the person who matches the most "before and after photos" of your classmates, wins a donated prize from a local business.
Fantasy/Mystical:
Masquerade Ball - This is always a popular one with masks and lavish costumes. Hire a couple of violin or cello players from a local college (students are always doing gigs like this to make money) for effect.
Magic in Camelot - King Auther and Guenievere's castle and a moat. How much more romantic can you get?
A space Odyssey - Go galactic with space ships and robots.
Enchanted Forest - Trees, twinkling lights and magical sprites will pull this theme off.
Candyland - This would be a sweet one with a marshmallow mountain, lollipop flowers and anything sweet (PS go to the dentist before this prom).
Geographical:
Life is a Gamble - Make your prom Vegas-style with fun games (no money involved only tickets) and high rolling game tables.
International Intrigue - Go global by highlighting various tidbits about other countries (use flags and fashion to decorate) serve international food like mini tostadas, mini crepes and mini brats.
Trip the Lights Fantastic - New York, New York style with flashing lights and skyscrapers. Perhaps even raise money for a small plaque with your school's name on it for a brick on one of the New York 9/11 memorials.
Jungle Love - Go eco-friendly and save a rainforest by going with this theme and perhaps even donating part of the ticket money
