He’s back, but with a brand new face, brand new Tardis, and a brand new companion. Matt Smith picks up the rather daunting shoes of David Tennant in the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who.
The Eleventh Hour is the very first episode in the fifth (or first depending on how you lean) series of Doctor Who. Having saved the Earth, and sent the Timelords and Gallifrey packing, the Doctor now in his eleventh incarnation has only just regenerated before he is thrown into action.
Amelia Pond has a crack in her wall, but as she soon discovers through the eyes of the Doctor that this is not a crack in just her wall, but a crack in time. The crack a link to something from another dimension. But what made the crack, and is it a crack or a doorway.
There has been much anticipation for the return of Doctor Who, as it begins a brand new series the first since 2008. Matt Smith was a disturbing choice for many, with his unusual looks, and his incredibly young age many were immediately Matt Smith haters. But that hatred has been proven wrong, for as I write this thousands of people across the UK are writing about how much they enjoyed his role. Because unknown Matt Smith has already in one episode filled David Tennant’s shoes and immediately made the role of the Doctor his.
Karen Gillan takes on the role of Amy Pond (an older version of Amelia), the first proper companion since Donna Noble was forced to leave the Doctor in July 2008. Amy is an interesting addition to the show, because she is what David Tennant was a Scottish person impersonating an English person, but she soon loses the accent in favor of her Scottish tongue, after a confusing ten minutes or so. Gillan is attractive, and quirky but in a very girl next door manner, she could be plain, or beautiful and moves swiftly between the two at the drop of a hat, a police hat in this case.
As is very common the first episode of the series always is a little hollow, its building the plot for future stories, and developing the characters. After all its all new characters, and all new sets, there is so much to explain, more so than any story since the very first story of the new Doctor Who, Rose. So the poor caliber villains that we see can be forgiven.
The Eleventh Hour is a very good start to a brand new series, its full of great humor and excitement. The new theme tune comes as a shock, but Doctor Who is always about change, this new score is a blend of tunes from back to the BBCI shows to the most recent two part Christmas special.
While I’ll tell you little about the episode, I will reveal that this year’s thread (something every series has had) is in the word MYTH! There will of course be other parts to this, but mark my words the word MYTH is the most important word you’ll hear this year.
In the near future the Doctor and his Jammie Dodger obsession will encounter new creatures like the Smilers, old friends in the form of River Song, and the return of some of the most popular villains from past and more recent series, I am of course talking Weeping Angels, Cybermen, Daleks and the Silurians.
