Based on the true story of Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy the film follows them and their family as they take in a homeless teenager called Michael “Big Mike” Oher. Michael comes from a broken home and finds himself becoming part of the Tuohy family with them changing his life and in the process his presence in their lives leading them to some lovely discoveries. Michael’s talent for football starts to shine through and with the help of his family he begins to build his grades but can he get to his dream of All American Offensive Left Tackle?
The reason why this film is just brilliant is because of the acting. The first person I really must talk about is of course Sandra Bullock. Being a fan of this brilliant actress for years, from her films in While You Were Sleeping to The Proposal this is the first film where I think she’s really been able to show her full ability, she was able to show us that she was able to do serious, but then she was still able to bring out a lot of laughs from the audience and deliver what I think was an amazing performance and the best performance of her career so far.
Quinton Aaron was fantastic, I’m sure he only has about 40 lines at most in the whole movie, most of his performance as the wonderful Michael Oher is mainly just done by his expressions and the expression ‘the eyes are the window to the soul’ is never more poignant as in this film, Aaron managed to show so much expression in his eyes and he really showed so much heartache and you could really see his ‘soul’ through his eyes in the beginning and it really adds so much emotion to the role.
The one thing I was worried about was Sandra Bullock when it came to watching the film. We’re all so used to seeing her as a comedy actress, so was I going to believe her performance in what I thought was going to be a really serious role. I’m not sure how comedic the original script was, but I think it was very smart to make sure that the role of Leigh Anne was very funny and then hire Sandra Bullock to be in this role.
The film throughout was giving a lot of lightness by Bullocks character, her comic timing as always is exceptional and I think the film gained an extra star for me for this additional extra that I really didn’t expect. The whole cinema was laughing in many points throughout the film and I think with that this role for Bullock was just amazing, to be given a role where she has to ‘carry’
