If you are in business, then the first and foremost concern you have is in making a profit. If you can be green while doing it, so much the better. There are some things that you can do to accomplish that, by cutting costs, and helping the environment at the same time.

1. Paper products are the major part of every office, and, every business. Memos, instructions, communication, advertising, are all  traditionally reasons to use paper. However, this is the 21st century, and, there are ways to get around this problem. In the past, not only did communication and advertising mean using tons of paper, you also needed to pay postage to mail the items. This can run into a lot of money over the year. Encourage everyone in your business to e-mail whenever possible. Memos, or instructions can be quickly and easily communicated, and, it is faster than snail mail.  Even advertising can be handled online. When you do need to use paperwork, use recycled paper. It is just as good, and is an environmentally helpful resource.

2. Energy usage, a big part of your business budget, can be controlled. Be aware of the electricity you use. Take stock of the lighting, and replace bulbs and lighting with energy efficient substitutes. Turn off computers at night when not in use. Security lighting is necessary, when the business is closed, but use energy efficient types, and, even motion sensor lighting where applicable.
Heating and cooling should be controlled and set at specific temperatures. You don’t want to freeze people, but several people adjusting the thermostat can result in higher costs and more usage. Take a look at how well insulated your business actually is. Windows, doors, walls and ceilings can be sources of energy loss.

3. Water usage can be controlled. It might benefit an employer to take a look at the bathroom fixtures. Changing the toilets to low water systems, and the sink faucets to automatic water dispensers can control excess water use. Also, check for leaks and drips. If your business has landscaping, don’t water the lawn when it isn’t necessary. Often controls are automatic, so watering may be continuing even during a rain storm.

4. Go green in the office with some plants. Silk plants are nice, but they don’t do much to clean the environment.

5. Recycle everything you can. Set up some recycling bins for employees where they can throw plastics or cans. Shred and recycle paper products.

6. Recycle printer cartridges and any other office products that can be recycled. If you have outmoded office equipment that you need to dispose of, give it to a recycler who specializes in equipment, or donate it to a church, school, or thrift store.

7. Look for office furniture, carpeting, and wall coverings made from sustainable materials.

8. If you have company cars or trucks, use hybrids whenever possible. If it isn’t possible, have your vehicles checked out periodically, and tuned up, to maximize their efficiency.

9. Use “Energy Star” appliances. Microwaves, coffee makers, dishwashers, and counter top ovens all come in energy saving styles. If you need to change out a furnace, water heater, or air conditioning system it is vital to look for energy saving ratings.

10. Promote your own green campaign by giving “freebies” that have something to do with the environment. Pass out recycled shopping bags, notepads, or other writing material that is labeled with environmentally responsible information.

Businesses, just like homes, can benefit the environment by taking time to consider greener practices on a daily basis, and save money in the process.
