Where God was on 9/11 is not the right question to ask. A more appropriate question is: where were people before 9/11? We always expect God to help us when we need Him since we believe in Him. But the truth is quite otherwise. We do not truly believe in God. We just say we do, but in reality we do not. In other words, we are believers with words, not with deeds.
We do not do what God asks us to do. Then, one day we ask Him to help us. Imagine if a friend wanted your help many times in the past but you did not offer a hand. Then something has happened and you are in dire need of help. Will you ask that friend to help you? If the thought of asking him or her for help has crossed your mind, then you should bow your head in shame.
Give and you shall receive. That’s what we often hear but we do not reflect on its true meaning. If we do not obey God why would He answer our calls? He would not, right? Wrong. God is more merciful than we think. Although people do not truly worship Him, He does not really punish them. God is only reminding us of what we should be doing.
If I ask you now to count all of the blessings that God has given you, you will never count them all. And if I ask you to count how many sins you commit everyday, you probably would not be able to count them either. An infinite number of sins committed by people and an infinite number of blessings from God and people are still angrily questioning where God was on 9/11.
God should take away the blessings He has given from those who always commit sins. That’s what I call fairness. But God does not do that because He is merciful. But when people always commit a certain sin, God sends a reminder to prevent them from doing it. AIDS for example is a reminder from God. Should we ask about why God lets some suffer from AIDS? Of course we should not.
You probably know about some people who have AIDS and they have dedicated their lives to teaching others about AIDS. Some of them feel happier than before. This is because they feel that they give something valuable to their societies.
God does something that no human being can do. He reminds people and asks them to obey him by making others suffer. And at the same time, those who initially suffer find the happiness that they dreamed of before in that suffering.
You will always find a positive side on everything that God does. I am very sure that many “bad” things happened to you in the past. But later you discovered that those bad things paved the way to good things that happened to you.
There are two things to learn. First, God is a merciful ruler. If He was not, we would be in hell by now because of the huge amount of sins we commit daily. Second, since God is merciful, He does not punish us but He positively reminds us of what we should be doing. Therefore, where God was on 9/11 is not the right question. The most appropriate question is: what is the message that God sent on 9/11?
