Poetry: Your disrespect

by Marea E. Johnson

Created on: April 01, 2010   Last Updated: May 16, 2011

Your disrespect has brought to me
more grief than you could know
It brought me to a place
where no one should ever have to go.

Your disrespect had rendered me
unable to stand tall
And left me torn and tattered
having no self-worth at all.

Your disrespect had caused me
to believe I had no chance
That any good I'd ever do
would just be happenstance.

Your disrespect had left me
feeling stupid, ugly, dumb
It made me feel unworthy
of everything and everyone.

But your disrespect has also
left an unexpected surprise
It's thickened up my skin
and it's opened up my eyes.

It's made me so much stronger
than I could ever hope to be
And in spite all of your disrespect-
I'm still here and I'm still ME.
