Life has become so hectic with work, family responsibilities, and social events that it all can be a bit overwhelming. How do you stay organized with so much to do? Simple, you just need to utilize a few basic tips that will make accomplishing tasks much easier. Here are some ways to help you improve your organizational skills and get your life in order.
Start your days by making a "to do" list. Decide what needs done and when it needs done and write it down so you won't forget it. If bills need paid that day, write down what ones and how much. If a household chore needs done, write it down. Anything that you plan to accomplish that day should be written down for you to see. That way, when each task is complete, you can cross it off and know that it's done.
Keep a calendar handy where you can write appointments, events, family activities, and/or things you plan to accomplish that month. Write things down as they come to you so you don't forget or miss anything. Make sure to jot down times, contact numbers, and any other information that will be handy in case you need it. Hint: I keep a giant calendar on my kitchen wall with boxes that are big enough for me to write down more than one thing at a time.
Cell phones are great for holding information regarding important contacts. Many of them allow you to add email addresses, birthdays, and even addresses. Make sure you take the time to keep it updated. And of course, be certain you have contact numbers for emergencies such as area hospitals, AAA, Police stations or whatever you may need.
Create a budget of your monthly bills. You can use a spreadsheet to do this or just write them in a notebook, using a new sheet of paper for each month. Either way, it's a good idea to put them by month due. This will help you to pay bills on time and even reduce the stress of wondering what is due, when, and how much.
Purchase a metal filing cabinet that will hold hanging folders or create one using a large box and plain manilla folders. Mark each folder that use wish to save things in for future reference. For example, store bank statements, paid bills, tax returns, and even your monthly budget printouts. Save everything for at least one year, except taxes which should be saved for 5-7 years.
Helpful Tips:
* Ask others to help you organize any large projects that are overwhelming such as cleaning out a basement or having a garage sale.
* Being organized can save you time in the long run.
* Post it notes are a great way to quickly jot down something that you need to remember.
* Try not to overwhelm yourself by being too organized.
* The idea is to know where everything is for "you" not everyone else.
* Being organized takes some discipline, but if you can start a routine, you'll more than likely be able to stick to it.
