Is it possible to become addicted to writing?

"Hello, my name is (blank) and I am addicted to writing."

Can you imagine being in a room full of people saying something like that? Can you imagine a 12-step program designed to get people to stop writing?

That is not something I would want to endure.

I am not addicted to writing, but I do have an insatiable need to write. There are words and plots swimming inside of my mind begging to be let out.

Daily, I put pen to paper and watch stories and characters develop.

While some might call that an addiction, that writing is my drug of choice, I find it to be necessary to my very being.

I cannot easily recall a time when I did not write. Even before I was literate, I would make up stories in my head, funny little ramblings of my four year old imagination.

You could say that I'm hooked on the outlet writing provides and the sense of accomplishment I feel when I complete an article or a story.

Singers sing because music is part of their souls, a part of their essence. Their hearts beat to a certain rhythm and their voices follow suit.

This is similar to writers. Writers write because there is nothing else about which we are so passionate.

Both crafts, indeed, any art form, allows its creators to share a piece of themselves with the rest of the world.

For many of us, if we were unable to write, if we were not allowed some method to string together words and give them some permanence, a piece of our souls would ache and slowly fade away.

There are, of course, some who let their passion for writing take over their lives. These unfortunate few leave little to no time for anything else.

It should be remembered, though, that those with addictive personalities will latch on to whatever brings them pleasure, be it a drug or a habit.

For those who do become addicted, it is likely to the "high" that writing provides, and the knowledge that what they are creating will live on long after they themselves are gone.

But for the rest of us, writing is a necessary outlet for our imaginations.

For me, writing has not become my whole life at the expense of other things or people; rather, it has served to enrich my life and feeds my soul.
