How to start a lawn service

Created on: March 30, 2010

You may not think that this is the right time to start a new business with the failure rate of most new business being nine out of ten failing in the first year. The fact is that a lawn service business is usually not included as one of the high-failure types of business.

There are several good reasons why it is less likely that your lawn service business won’t fail. This type of business is considered “service oriented.”

A service oriented business is easier to start and takes less start up capital than other types of businesses. There is usually very little overhead with a service business because you won’t have to rent or supply utilities for an office or hire employees. With a service oriented business such as lawn care you will usually want to do-it-yourself because of a love for this kind of service to others.

You may have chosen to start your own lawn service for several reasons. You may want to add income or begin a business of your own so you don’t have the regular nine to five grind to contend with. You may see a need for this type of service in your community or you may just love working out of doors. You may have a green thumb or an eye for beautiful landscaping.

If you are only just slightly interested in the lawn service aspect of your new chosen business you can do research either online or find answers about planting and landscaping in hundreds of books on the subject.

While you’re looking to find answers to your lawn service questions you may also want to look into business topics to help you run your new service smoothly, without the usual glitches most new business owners make.

If this new income move is a way to bring in extra income and you hold a current job, you might consider keeping the steady income until you get your lawn service up and running successfully.

There are some basics you will need to start your own lawn care service. If this is a particular interest you have had for some time you probably have most of the equipment to start up, such as hand tools for lawn care and lawn maintenance. If you don’t have the larger tools you need such as mowers and lawn tractors you can always rent them at first and you will probably need a truck and a trailer to haul our equipment.

Your state probably requires that you acquire a business license to conduct your lawn service and you will probably want to put out notification flyers or advertise in your local paper. When you get your business license you will want to ask if there is any other special license or certifications you need to conduct this type of business.

This is also the time to consider what kind of insurance you may need. You probably won’t need a lot at first but you will need some kind of protection to keep from losing all of your hard work starting your lawn service business to the first tiny lawsuit that might happen.

Starting your own lawn service is a very smart choice for many reasons and can net you a hefty second income or your best small business venture ever.
