It’s really too bad that Flight of the Living Dead, directed by Scott Thomas, went straight to DVD, because it would have made an excellent box office cheesy horror flick. It had everything that a zombie movie needs:
1. The setting of Flight of the Living Dead is a 747 jumbo jet, and is the perfect inescapable place to have a zombie outbreak. It creates a whole new set of rules about how you must deal with them, and still threatens the entire world, because if the plane were to crash, the outbreak would be worldwide.
2. The idiot, in this case, a crazy scientist on the run with a stupid plan and a coffin containing another scientist infected with the evil zombie virus. Combine that with a super stormy night, and you have the perfect recipe for chaos. You have to love scientists who will risk putting the rest of the world in danger over some government experiment gone terribly wrong.
3. The zombies in this movie were very well done, oozing and dripping as they ripped through the plane attacking innocent riders.
4. The gore was just right, not over the top, and tastefully done....if you're a zombie, that is.
5. The heroes in Flight of the Living Dead were both comedic and heroic as they fought through the evil masses in an attempt to save the day.
6. The cliché factor perfectly forces you to have a personal bond with the characters right away. It is the pilot's last flight, the couple that do naughty things in the bathroom mid-flight, and the flight attendant so excited to see Paris. You have no choice but to scream for their survival when the zombies sneak into center stage.
7. The action was non stop once the zombies started picking off unsuspecting plane riders. There was non stop fighting-biting action.
8. The makers of Flight of the Living Dead packed it full of special effects that will have you giggling, “Eew!”
9. The thickening of the plot when no country will allow the 747 to land with its infected cargo.
10. Less known but not totally unknown actors make this movie slightly easier to deal with, although a Samuel L. Jackson type speech about being sick of the ^*@* zombies in the &^%$ plane would have made the movie perfect. Instead, you get to watch David Chisum, Kristen Kerr, Kevin J. O’Connor, Derek Webster, Dale Midkiff, Erik Avari, and Richard Tyson taking zombie mayhem to a whole new level.
The only problem with this movie was that there weren't any zombies for quite a while, which got really annoying and left me asking, "Um, are there going to be any zombies in this zombie movie?" Once the gore hit the fan, I forgot all about the fact that I spent so much time longing for the undead to show up.
Flight of the Living Dead is definitely a zombie movie to add to your collection. If you want maximum fun when watching this movie, grab a bunch of friends, wait until it’s dark, turn off all the lights, and huddle close, because it’s going to be a turbulent ride!
