Getting started with a musical instrument: Tips for beginners

Learning to play a musical instrument, and play it well, takes a lot of work, and personal dedication.  Playing an instrument provides a person with a lifetime of pleasure, and a sense of accomplishment. It is worth the time and practice it takes to become proficient at an instrument, whatever instrument one chooses to play.

Whether you learn to play to piano, a string instrument, or a brass instrument. Becoming a musician is one of the most rewarding things a person can do for themselves, and it builds character as well.  Why not invest a portion of your life learning to play music, after all, music soothes the savage beast.

Music comes from within us, from our souls, placed within us by our creator, and it is a reflection of our inner being.  When we make music, we are expressing our own personal creativity and free will, we become the artist painting a picture with notes and chords, Melodies and harmonies, a beautiful masterpiece. Do you have the inner passion to choose an instrument?  To learning the intricacies of your chosen instrument well? Do you desire to be the best at it you can be, to be the best of the class?

Maybe you have already started playing an instrument,  you are finding it difficult, and you are considering quitting?

I urge you to stop and think about the ramifications of being a quitter, giving up will just leave you wondering later on if you might have become a great musician or not. You'll be kicking yourself for the rest of your life, so stick with it, and give it all you got. Yes it takes a lot of work to become really good at it, but trust me when I say to you that it is worth every second you spend practicing, building your skills up.

The other side of this is being a part of a school band, or orchestra where you will get much experience, and get plenty of chances to prove just how good you are as you learn to play many different styles of music.  You also get to make all kinds of new friends, some of which can last a lifetime, nothing is more fun that getting together with friends and playing your instruments together.

My advice is to work harder, and practice longer than everyone else does, it will pay off in the long run. Taking private lessons helps you develop your skills more rapidly, so it's a a wise investment to make. Make sure you keep your instrument in clean and in good working order, and brass players don't use your mouthpiece to shoot paper wads, they will ultimately find their way into your instrument, and can impede your playing.

Whatever instrument you choose, I hope you will make a wise choice, and stick with it, it's worth it in the long run.
