Poetry: For my child

by Jac Alyn

Created on: March 29, 2010   Last Updated: March 30, 2010

We see you as a baby
Even though you’re turning one
We see you as our baby
As you stand and try to run.

First birthdays are a big one
We didn’t think of it before
That you’re growing so much faster
Than we are ready for

We want to help you grow to be
The smartest and the best
We never wanted to admit
It’d be sooner than we guessed

You’re walking now and talking soon
And someday you will be
Too cool to hang around with us
As we wait patiently

For life to take you anywhere
Your little heart desires
We know that one day you will learn
As much as is required

But for right now please can’t you stay
Our little boy forever
To hold you on my chest again
Is still my greatest pleasure

I know it is our job to help
You grow and grow and grow
But no one ever told us
How hard it’d be to let you go

Be true to life as it will be
The hardest part of living
Never underestimate
The joy these years are giving
