The saying goes "size doesn't matter" but every beauty addict knows that it really doeswhen it comes to your hair! Hair is getting bigger this season and everyone wants the sexed-up looks that were made famous by Marilyn Monroe and Brigitt Bardot, but how do you create these stunning and timeless styles, without looking a little like Marge Simpson? What if you were born with hair that just hangs?
The basics
Being from the South, Roi Parker knows that "The bigger the better!" Parker, owner and head stylist of R.O.I. Salon in North Carolina, advises clients that "The cut is key! A reverse layer cut underneath the hair will give you more volume than layers cut on top of the hair.
Another flat hair culprit lies in your blow-drying routine. At home, most people dry their hair down rather than up" explains Parker. "Making a switch to dry your hair upward will make a big volume difference."
Hiro Harguchi, top stylist and owner of The Hiro Haraguchi Salon in New York City, agrees. "Because hair grows downward, it's important to go against your hairs growth pattern when drying. This is why it's so crucial to dry hair in the opposite direction."
If your hair is extra limp, kick it up with some color. "Color actually gives hair more volume because it plumps up the individual strands" explains Paula Conway, beauty authority and author of the upcoming book The Beauty Buyble.
According to Conway, layers generally give hair volume. "For short hair, look at Jessica Simpson's new 'do', it's shorter in the back with long, soft layers up front. Also look at Kelly Ripa. Kelly uses an iron to straighten her hair, but it has carefully angled layers to give it volume. Another short cut with volume is Scarlett Johansson. Again, short hair like Kelly's and very fine, but the long layers, carefully framing her face and long, sweeping bangs give her hair volume it would not otherwise have. With long hair, look to Katie Holmes, this is a quintessential cut for volume, and done in typical Oscar Blandi style with long, soft layers framing the face. Marcia Cross is another example. Her layers are much longer than Katie's, particularly around her face, but they are there."
Coveting the voluminous locks of the stars? Whether you have 5 minutes, overnight, or a few hours - it is possible regardless of what hair you were born with.
