To me, the whole and/or main point to the Jonah part of the bible is one of free will. Yea, Jonah ran from what God wanted him to do but God sees this all the time and there's nothing so special about that. The city he was to go to was evil in there acts. Jonah was for the most part probably a good hearted man in his eyes and maybe God's eye. Let's just say that Jonah needed a little more reason to do what God was asking of him. Jonah says later that he knew God was forgiving and that God would probably not destroy the evil city. He probably thought he knew God would just teach them a lesson. By this I mean exactly that "teach them". God probably was killing to birds with one stone "sort of speak". Because Jonah was going to learn a few lessons of his own in the process. One, Jonah was not to curious of what God would do. Jonah was probably more curious what God was going to do to him. The city was most likely Gods main concern because evil things where happening in his place. The evil wheel was getting the grease again from God. Jonah must have been thrilled. Here Jonah is again at the point of Gods sword but does he get any credit. Probably not.
Jonah, was to say the least, not to enthused about the whole thing. Saving the city and all. He had a part of him that wanted to see them get what he thought they deserve, like punishment maybe? Here Jonah was getting punished and he was a good man. God probably wanted Jonah to "want to help and/or save the city from there evil ways but it was God doing it. God took the worm out of the evil city so that it could grow. The city is like the plant that God puts over Jonah's head to shade him from the sun when he walks out of the city in frustration at what has happened. God givith and God taketh away! Why didn't Jonah want to fix the city? Why did Jonah want to see evil for evil? He was adherently a good man. I think God wanted to see them all "want" to do the right thing.
God's the one showing all the enthusiasm here and he does this sort of stuff all the time and if he don't keep taking care of things so they grow well everything just goes to hell. Hang in there God I think people are getting the message!
