I cannot be too sure, but I do believe to some degree that the Christian faith is more susceptible to people leaving than any other religion.
But why? I will allow myself to be incredibly vulnerable and say that I myself have had doubts about my Christian faith, and whether I should abandon it. Although, those threats are usually in vain, because whatever issues I had usually blow over the next day and all is well.
I think one of the biggest reasons people would want to drift away from their faith is just what they see in the world around them. Things are chaotic. Economies are falling, corruption has fallen into politics, weather patterns are doing strange things around the globe. And, I do believe that people are conditioned to believe, or maybe convince themselves to believe, that God wouldn't allow such things to happen.
And, when they do, we get upset. "Why did this happen? Aren't you taking care of us? Aren't you watching what's happening?" and questions like those flood our minds; and if the chaos becomes too great, then we start to ask ourselves, "is my faith system really worth it?"
Sometimes, the secular world can be so ingrained in us, the music we listen to, the TV shows we watch, the books we read and so forth, and that starts to become more of us than our faith does. And, we often wonder to ourselves, "how did I get this far out of the boat?"
However, I do think that with many people of faith, something usually catches them as they slowly start drifting, and something pulls them back to where they should be. Maybe "pulls back" is a little drastic, "gently nudges" might be better. On the other hand, I do also believe that these secondary things: economy, world chaos, secularization of society, are all tests of our faith in all forms.
And maybe those things are brought our way to test our faith. Nobody likes tests, I sure don't. But, tests do test our knowledge. And, as people of faith, tests of our faith are brought our way to test our resolve; and just how important our faith is to us. Will we look to our faith, or to something else to medicate?
If you drift, don't feel too bad. I think it happens to all of us. Look deep inside yourself, and I think you'll find the very thing that brought you to faith in the first place, and that usually brings you back.
