The Animal Inside Me

My internal beast is five decades old

And remembers things

From when he was four.

He is quick to anger and can punch the air

In fury,

Imaginary antagonists crumpling

Before his blows,

Those who slighted or insulted

Recently or long ago.

He sneaks peeks at pretty girls,

Undressing them with lurid leering eyes.

This creature can love tenderly

But selfishly

Because it wants to be loved

And liked

And admired,

Drinks it in like heady wine

Which he also copiously consumes.

My animal argues for fun

For joy

For thrill

The kill

For angst

For hate

The mate

For proof

His Truth.
