Spring cleaning: Inexpensive tips for gaining new closet space

It doesn't cost a fortune to make the most of closet space. Often people think this is a major job though with a little time put aside for the task, this is made more effective. It may not be a question of changing closets for newer ones. It may just be a time to make the most of existing space, and the Spring cleaning period is the ideal time, as the mindset is on getting things ready for the summer. The days are still a little unpredictable for working outdoors, so take the opportunity to sort out your closets, and you will be surprised what can be achieved on a budget.


~Sorting out the clothing.


As seasons change, so to clothing needs. One of the most effective forms of storage these days takes up little space. Vacuum bags allow you to store out of season clothing and to keep it as fresh as the day it was packed away. Empty the closet and place everything onto the bed. Be brutal in deciding which items are no longer used. Think of the summer and autumn and work out which clothing would be used during this time. Then vacuum pack the items which will not be used. Vacuum bags suck all the air out of the storage and make your items very compact indeed, meaning that storage of them on a high up shelf is very simple indeed. These are a relatively cheap method of storing things which are bulky and not needed out of the way, giving more room for those items used every day.


~Sorting hanging items from folded items.


Sort out into two piles those items which fold and those which hang. This is quite important since this will give you a better idea of what storage you really need to be able to put your clothing neatly away and leave space for new additions. One of the aspects of hanging items with modern clothing is that often these are not long. Look at the length of the items to be hung, and sort these so that all of the longer items are put to one side in the closet. What this does is show you what space is available at the bottom of the wardrobe which would normally be a wasted space. Hanging skirts and jackets and items which are not full length together frees up valuable space for shoes and accessories.


~Working out shelf space.


Once the hanging items have been sorted, have a look at the space available. Buying some MDF is very cheap indeed, and each shelf made can be finished to look similar to the finish of the wardrobe itself.
