What can deter the less enthusiastic writer is that it can take a while to begin to earn from submitting articles to Helium, but for those with a passion for writing and a willingness to persist respectable sums can be made after a quantity of articles have been written. The minimum number articles needed to really begin to earn on Helium is around 500, which is why quantity is so important.

Upfront payments is the easiest way to begin to earn from your articles. Helium pays members whose articles are within the first five to be submitted to a title, and the amount received will depend on how many writing stars they have. The more you write the more stars you receive, and the more stars you have the more you earn.

The minimum number of stars needed to begin to make money is one, which means you will be paid 50cents for each article you submit, whilst those that have gained the maximum five writing stars will receive $2.50 for each article.

It is important to keep in mind however that some title categories are exempt from these upfront payments. The reason for this is that some categories generate more advertising revenue for Helium so it is in their interest to encourage members to write on subjects that are likely to create traffic for them. The kind of categories exempt include food and drink and creative writing.

As well as receiving payments for submitting articles to categories that qualify, Helium also shares some of its advertising revenue with members. Although this is not much, for those writers who have submitted a large quantity of articles the amount can accumulate to a good sum, which is another reason why quantity is so important.

If for instance you receive 20 cents in page views per month for an article and you have 1000 submitted articles you can receive quite a pleasant sum each month which will be added to the upfront payments. For those who are able to market their work well 20 cents for each article may be modest, so earnings can be even better. Maintaining the quantity of article submissions is therefore important to increasing your monthly earnings.

Although Helium also offers other ways to earn money from submitting articles, these are the two principle means of revenue for most writers. By maintaining a continuous output of articles you will be constantly adding to the quantity of submissions and therefore increasing your earnings potential. It is however equally important to balance this against the quality of your writing. Better quality writing usually rises to the top of submitted titles gaining greater visibility in search engines. This leads to more page views and therefore even more earnings. Even without the consideration of greater earnings, the better the quality of your writing, the better your reputation and standing as an article writer will be, and in the final analysis this has to be the fundamental purpose of writing online articles.
