Her First Kiss
The air was crisp and chilly as the moon shone full and veiled the earth in a magical light that danced like silver dust on everything it touched. Ella basked in the ethereal glow like an enchanted mermaid stretched out on the flat bed full of hay. She had just returned from the harvest festival and was drunk with excitement as this was the first year she was old enough to attend without a chaperone. Accompanied by her best girls she had enjoyed her first taste of freedom at fourteen. The night was filled with the smells and sounds of innocent youth and was a welcoming sight to her virgin eyes. She drank in every facet of the festival as if she endeavored to douse a fire which would not subside. She lay there on her side under the silvery moon and touched her thin fingers to her ripe lips. A smile crept across her angelic face as her brown eyes sparkled in the night. It was the best night of her entire life she thought, as she relived the moments that would forever be engraved in her young mind. She felt her heartbeat quicken as she whispered his name into the still air. Charlie was one year her senior and with thick locks of ember, and the shoulders of an ox, he was the envy of every boy at County High and the dream of every girl. Ella had met Charlie by mistake on the first day of school; while looking for her history class she stumbled into the wrong room and was met by Charlie’s stunning emerald eyes staring back at her from the front row. They shared a moment and in those few seconds stole each other’s heart. Ella was shy at school and although she ached for Charlie’s embrace, she was never brave enough to allow him entrance into her personal space. He walked her to all of her classes and carried her books for her always, their affection for one another was clear to all that had eyes, and their appreciation grew slowly into love. It would be tonight, that she would allow her heart to express its fondness for the one called Charlie. And under the shimmering stars, behind the balloon booth with the sweet of cotton candy still lingering in their mouths, they would share each other’s very first kiss. The smell of his skin was an alien delight as she breathed in his scent, robust and sweet, and tasted his warm tongue as it caressed hers ever so softly. Never in her life had Ella imagined that a simple kiss could be so fragrant and entirely captivating. She felt as if she were going to faint, and explode, and scream with joy all at once, nothing would ever compare. And so Ella drifted into the haze of young love lying beneath the charming moon entranced by the moment that would forever change her life.
