¨An Education¨ is a movie based on an article written by Lynn Barber a journalist from England. As she was writing her memoirs base on the article, Nick Hornby (High Fidelity and About a boy) was developing the screenplay.
Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is a sixteen year old girl who wishes to know the world, but living in a small town in England with her closed minded parents, who forbid her to listen to French singers like Juliette Greco, limits her education.
David (Peter Sarsgaard) is a man who becomes Jenny’s friend in the hopes of introducing her to the word that she always dreamed of, while making sure her parents like him as much as she does.
This movie deals with various social topics of the time (60´s) what is a young girl to do with an education, will she succeed in the world or will she be condemn to be a book worm teacher, single and unhappy. Can she get married and be a sophisticated woman or just a housewife taking care of the kids. Can she be smarter than her classmates and parade with older people who are more up to her standers, or is she really a naïve girl running with a pack of wolfs.
This movie will show you all that a sixteen year old girl feels and thinks, towards her friends, her town, her parents and her heart.
The universal theme is presented in an excellent script that gives it like it is when it comes to Jenny’s language, with a cast of actors who represent some of England talent like the great Emma Thompson, Olivia Williams, Dominic Copper, Rosamund Pike.
The relationships between Jenny and her parents, her friends and her teacher will most likely shape who she becomes, but it is the relationship with David and his very adventurist adult friends that will defined her.
The locations are beautiful, the settings romantic and in a great Parisian scenes is difficult to deny that Carey has the look of the next Audrey Hepburn, so much so that she might take on the role of Eliza Doolittle made famous by Hepburn.
An Education is not something that we haven't seen before, a young woman falls in love with and older man, but the script, actors and scenery makes us forget that we might know the ending of the story and just enjoy the ride.
