How to adjust to life with a new puppy

So I was having a really bad day at work and I really wanted to do something to cheer me up. On my one hour lunch break I decided to visit some furry friends at the local Humane Society. First of all, I can't go in there without wanting to take every animal home with me. I actually was 30 minutes late because I just couldn't leave. So anyway, while I was in there I decided to look at the puppies. The second I opened the door to the puppy room, I looked to my left and there he was. Black fur sticking out of the holes of the cage, big wide grin on his face and these piercing eyes that just screamed, "TAKE ME!" Although I wasn't shopping for a dog, I knew he had to be mine. Buster was his name and he was a border collie mix, 4 months old. He had the fluffiest fur that I couldn't keep my hands off of. I took him outside to play for a little while but he wouldn't leave my side, he kept licking my face, hands, any part of my skin he could get to. I was in love immediately. As I was leaving I started to cry. I knew there was no way I could afford this dog, let alone have the time to take care of him.

The next morning, when I woke up to go to work, the only thing I could think of was Buster. There was just something about him that captured my heart. So I called my mom and told her that I wanted a puppy for Christmas, if that was all I got for Christmas I would be happy. Now at this point in my life I had moved out of my moms house and got my own place. I really felt like I needed a simple change in my life.
There were some complications with actually purchasing the dog but after all the drama he was finally mine. I named him Zeppelin (which he learned in a week) and gave him a green collar.
So the first week I have him, he gets sick. I mean is coughing up nasty white stuff, cant stop hacking. I freaked. I immediately took him to the vet and found out that he had gotten Kennel Cough, which is sort of like bronchitis for dogs. I thought, 'great, my dog is sick, I don't have the time or money to deal with this' it was all very overwhelming. After being there for him and taking care of him I sort of felt like he was my child. I loved him with all my heart and I knew he loved me. When he started to feel better it made me feel like I had accomplished something. I felt so good about myself, I knew that it was because of my love and care that he got better. (and the medication but who cares about that?)
Now Zeppelin is 6 months and he is so smart. He knows how to sit, give me his paw, and lay down. I also have never had to put a leash on him. He stays at my side all the time. He hasnt pooped or peed in the house in over a month and everyday that I come home to work, I come home to this precious little ball of life.
