During winter people find that their electric bills are sky-high and with the recession it won't get any better. When the winter comes many people struggle to keep warm and try to find ways they can save money each month when it comes to paying the electric bill each month. Here are some tips to help cut your electric bill during the winter.

Prevent Drafts

When winter sets in you want to save more money then you have to spend so you need to take the time to properly prevent drafts from entering your home. If your windows cause drafts to enter your home you need to visit your local hardware store and buy some plastic to cover your windows. Once you have plastic over your windows you need some heavy, long curtains to help keep drafts out more than with just plastic alone. If you feel cold air coming from your doors it's time to replace the door if you can afford if you can't you can always place a blanket in front of the door.

Turn The Temperature Down

Even if its ten below zero outside you don't want to turn the temperature up, otherwise you will be paying dearly for it. You could always wear a Snuggie or add layers of clothes to help keep you warm in the winter without have to turn the heat up this winter. Always leave your thermostat at 67 degrees or else you will be paying over $140 for heat each month in the winter. At night you can add a few more blankets if you find that you get cold at night easily.

Check Your Water Heater

When winter time hits you need to go check your water heater. If you find that your water heater is set above 110 degrees you need to turn it down and be sure to check to see if you water heater is up to date, since older water heaters tend to cost more bill wise.

Cut Your Lights

When you leave home for any reason you should always turn them off and keep them off if you can help it. You have no idea how many people use the lights in day time and well you can imagine why they complain about their electric bill being so high. If you have to you can always install light timers to help out just in case you forget to turn the lights off when you left for work.
