Summer is a great time to lose weight while enjoying all that nature has to offer. From additional outdoor exercise opportunities to a wide and tasty array of fresh fruits and vegetables, this is a time of year perfectly designed for weight loss. By taking advantage of the season, you can motivate yourself, enjoy yourself - and see yourself shrinking in size - all while having fun.
Outdoor Exercise
Warmer weather equals outdoor fun for those willing to explore their community. Take a ride on a bike trail, take you dog for a walk, go for a (healthy) picnic and take a hike or go for a dip at the local lake - don't miss the great chances summer provides to get out there and move. Most places have lots of events during this time of year, from gardening shows to outdoor bazaars. Check out local happenings in your area to enjoy yourself and the outdoors while getting in a little extra movement.
Try a New, Fun Fitness Opportunity
Ever tried kayaking, rock wall climbing or other extreme or unusual sports? Choose one that thrills you and go for it! You'll gain self-confidence and perhaps find a new, healthy hobby to pursue.
Grow a Garden
A garden provides many benefits for those looking to shed pounds. First of all, it's a great way to spend more time outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Secondly, the results are tasty and healthy. Finally, gardening is real work and burns several hundred calories an hour depending on exactly what you're doing out there. So whether it's a large plot or a small square in your backyard, plant a garden this summer and enjoy.
Farmer's Markets
Even if you have a garden, you won't want to miss out on the opportunity to purchase locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Farmer's markets are a great way to include a diverse group of healthy foods in your summer diet. The appeal of fresh fruits and vegetables will encourage you to plan healthy meals during the hot summer months.
Longer Days Mean More Time to Play
Long, lazy summer days are a highlight of the season. Take a walk with your partner after dinner, go catch fireflies with the kids, or just sit on your porch with a cold glass of iced tea and relax. Whatever you do, experience summer to its fullest by making good use of the extra time in the evening, often the most enjoyable time of the day in the summer. You'll be glad you did.
Additional Summer Weight Loss Tips to Keep in Mind
1 - Outdoor activity in the summer is great, but be sure to stay well hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and carry a water bottle with you during extended periods outside.
2 - The sun's warm rays can feel great, but the long-term consequences can be painful and dangerous. Always wear sunscreen when spending time outside.
3 - Don't be tempted to buy ice cream and other cold but fattening foods this summer. Carry snacks with you and be prepared with alternatives. For instance, instead of buying a high-calorie treat from the ice cream man on the spur of the moment, treat yourself to a low-fat frozen yogurt at the end of the day. The eating enjoyment will be similar, but you'll be healthier and proud of your choices.
